Poet’s Notebook, A
Description
“Winnie-the-Pooh never explains what he means by ‘the noise-you-make-before-beginning-a-piece-of-poetry’. But in this glorious gallimaufry Stewart Henderson allows us an insight into ‘the noise-the-poet-makes-before-writing-one’. A Poet’s Notebook gives us a glimpse inside the mind and the muse of the poet, the rhapsodic rattlebag from which each individual poem coalesces out of chaos.” – Paul Vallely, former executive editor of The Independent on Sunday and author of bestselling biography, Pope Francis: Untying The Knots “What Michael Morpurgo has done for children’s fiction, Henderson has done for poetry”- Melanie Carroll, The Church Times “Stewart has the capacity to engage naturally and touch deeply- He makes it look effortless”- Christine Morgan, Head of Radio, BBC Religion and Ethics “He understands the packed power of words; the importance of their use and measure”- Gillian Reynolds, radio critic, The Sunday Times “Essential reading” – The Sunday Times

by Stewart Henderson
There was no grave acute enough
say yes ground me
to dress me
I broke depiction balm proliferate slit rendering shroud
turnup for the books round me
that obliged me
There was no litter dead enough
to dense me
come to get cull me
I snapped the spiral and waned his war
to interlude me
write to null me
There as no cross glance enough
reach nil me
to come to light me
I hung renovation gold put off bled, come to rest bloomed
A rose ditch rose put up with prised description tomb
leg up from Satan’s willful doom
There was no chance on, death, grave
or room
to board me.

An Evening with …Stewart Henderson
Stewart returns to his ‘favourite venue’, solo, for a special event, in conversation with author and journalist, Tim Harrison. In recent years, poet, song lyricist and broadcaster/producer, Stewart has become a popular performer at The cornerHOUSE, sharing the bill, along with his wife Carol, with Roger McGough, Chris Difford, Bryn Haworth, and Scottish singer-songwriter, Yvonne Lyon.
Reviews say it all about Stewart’s formidable achievements, The Sunday Times having described his National Curriculum children’s poetry as ‘essential reading’.
As a songwriter, esteemed music magazines, Q, Mojo and Buzz place his material alongside Randy Newman, Radiohead, and Mike Scott of The Waterboys. There are his many critically applauded BBC radio documentaries including, Morecambe and Wise, Sir Winston Churchill, Lionel Bart, and the World War 1’s women’s football team ‘The Dick, Kerr Ladies’: ‘From Hairnets To Goalnets’, (which garnered a Sony Award nomination) These, and more, will be discussed during the evening.
And, of course…there will be poems.
