    Margarete Boden nacque a Goncarzewo, vicino a Bromberg (oggi Bydgoszcz), figlia del proprietario terriero Hans Boden e di sua moglie Elfriede Popp.[2][3] Margarete aveva tre sorelle (Elfriede, Lydia e Paula) e un fratello.[4] Nel 1909 frequentò la Höhere Töchterschule di Bromberg. Durante la prima guerra mondiale lavorò come infermiera, a guerra finita continuò in un ospedale della Croce Rossa tedesca.[2]
