Book Review of Ladislao Diwa and the Katipunan by E.F. Calairo
Francis Ed Villanueva MAHISTO August 25, Book Review on Emmanuel Franco Calairo’s “Ladislao Diwa at ang Katipunan” Whenever the KKK or the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangan, Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan is mentioned or talked about, the first person everyone thinks about is Andres Bonifacio. Andres Bonifacio or the “Supremo” has always been attributed to the founding of the Katipunan. It was the Supremo, as history books would have it, who founded the Katipunan on July 07, together with Deodato Arellano, Teodoro Plata, Ladislao Diwa, José Dizon, Valentín Díaz at Azcarraga St., Manila. However, with Ladislao Diwa’s biography by Dr. Emmanuel F. Calairo, we learn that it was Ladislao Diwa who conceptualized and suggested the idea of a Katipunan to Bonifacio. This revelation in the book leads to some questions; if what Ladislao Diwa has said is true, shouldn’t there be proper credit given to him? Why was Bonifacio always given credit to the establishment of the Katipunan1 when it wasn’t him who thought of the idea in the first place? These questions, I will attempt to answer later in this review. About the Author Dr. Emmanuel F. Calairo got his Ph.D. in History from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon
