The Duchess of Devonshire: 1757-1806
Rachel Alberstadt The Duchess of Devonshire: 1757-1806 This essay will explore the historical portrayal of Georgiana (Spencer) of Cavendish, the Duchess of Devonshire1. It will primarily compare the portrayal of the 2009 The Duchess2 film, the Duchess of Devonshire biography by Amanda Foreman3, and Jane Dormer and Caroline Chapman's book, Elizabeth & Georgiana: the Two Loves of the Duke of Devonshire. This essay's intent is to explore the history of the Duchess while emphasizing the use of historiography and historiophoty. It will not seek the truth, only accuracy and evaluation of historical methods. It will attempt to explore the dimensions of the Duchess’s life with regards to the authors’ particular accents on themes such as political or cultural history. very good biography - entertaining - reads like a novel not a textbook! The Duchess was quite an amazing woman in a time when women were mostly ignored.

Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire was a fascinating woman who was ahead of her time and very much of her time. Bess Foster was a snake.

A biography of a facinating woman, ahead of her time she is a spirited woman who refuses to bow down and be a doormat to convention, though this brings its own problems. I felt myself engaged in her struggle and wanted to know more about her as I read through the book. Definitely a character I wouldn't mind going to dinner with!
There is an illustrated edition but it lacks the very interesting preface by the author where she decries the destruction of Georgiana's papers by her family.
