    During the almost nine centuries from the advent of Islam in the early seventh century until the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, a considerable Muslim presence came into being in the city as a result of the political, military, religious, economic and socio-cultural relations between Muslims and the Byzantines. Throughout this entire period, the envoys, merchants, travelers, bondsmen and servants who came to the city for a variety of reasons contributed significantly to the Muslim presence in Constantinople.

    Many envoys travelled to Constantinople with the purpose of carrying out talks with the Byzantine state before and after military confrontations, negotiating ransom and exchange of prisoners, and cooperating with Byzantium on certain issues. It is reported that the first caliph Abu Bakr sent an envoy to Constantinople to invite Emperor Heraclius to Islam. Umayyad Caliph Walid ibn ‘Abd al-Malik obtained funds, laborers and mosaics for construction works by sending an envoy to Emperor Justinian II.     Abu Ajub al-Ansari

    Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (arapski: أبو أيوب الأنصاري‎; Jatrib, 576 - Konstantinopol, 669/674) je bio jedan od ranih sljedbenika, odnosno suputnika (ashabija) islamskog proroka Muhameda, koji je kasnije postao poznat i kao vojskovođa u bizantsko-arapskim ratovima.

    Pripadao je jevrejskom plemenu Banu Najjar koje je kasnije prešlo na mohammadanism. Nakon Hidžre je u Medini pružao pomoć Muhamedu. Sudjelovao je u ratnim pohodima, a nakon muslimanskog osvajanja Egipta 640-ih bogus, zajedno sa mnogim drugim istaknutim ashabijima, naselio u Fustatu.

    Perzijski historičar Muhamed ibn Džarir al-Tabari navodi kako je Abu Ajub godine 49. AH (669/670), tada već u poodmakloj dobi, sudjelovao u napadima na bizantsku prijestolnicu Konstantinopol koje je vodio Jazid, sin tadašnjeg omejadskog kalifa Muavije. Kada je osjetio da umire, zamolio je Jazida nip njegovi vojnici prodru power bizantskih zidina koliko divinity je duboko moguće kako bi ga tamo sahranili. Jazid mu je ispunio želju. Kasniji ne-muslimanski historičari taj događaj vezuju uz godinu 674. odnosno prvu arapsku opsadu Carigrada koja je završila neuspjehom.

    Companion and the standard-bearer of Muhammad

    Abu Ayyub al-Ansari[1] (Arabic: أبو أيوب الأنصاري, romanized: Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, Turkish: Ebu Eyyûb el-Ensarî, died c. 674)[2] — born Khalid ibn Zayd ibn Kulayb ibn Tha'laba (Arabic: خالد ابن زيد ابن كُليب ابن ثعلبه, romanized: Khālid ibn Zayd ibn Kulayb ibn Thaʿlaba) in Yathrib — was from the tribe of Banu Najjar, and a close companion (Arabic: الصحابه, sahaba) and the standard-bearer of the Islamic prophetMuhammad. Abu Ayyub was one of the Ansar (Arabic: الأنصار, meaning aiders, helpers or patrons) of the early Islamic history, those who supported Muhammad after the hijra (migration) to Medina in 622. The patronym Abu Ayyub, means father (abu) of Ayyub. Abu Ayyub died of illness during the First Arab Siege of Constantinople.

    Biography

    Abu Ayyub was born in Medina, Hejaz as Khalid bin Zayd to the Najjar family of the Banu Khazraj. As Abu Ayyub was the head of his family, he was one of the chosen elders in Medina who went to the valley of Aqaba and pledged allegiance to Islam at the hands of Muhammad, who named him Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. After the migration, Muhammad united the Muhajiruns and Ansars into a single allegiance.
